The renovation and redecoration of something, especially a building is called refurbishment. Cosmetic renovations of a building include painting, decoration, conversions, alterations, major work repairs, modernisation, upgrade and extensions.

Although both terms are often used interchangeably, the main difference between the two is that renovation often involves restoring or repairing structure to a building or space in order to return it to a good or improved condition; while renovation usually involves retrofitting, equipment and cleaning.
